Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins or a group of veins in the anus or lower rectum. They can occur inside or outside of the anus. If located inside, they are typically painless.

What Causes Hemorrhoids?

Constipation, diarrhea, standing for long periods of time, pregnancy, obesity and frequent straining while having a bowel movement are all known causes of hemorrhoids.

Treatment for Hemorrhoids:

Treatment varies depending on the location of the hemorrhoid. Basic treatment includes:

  • Keeping the anal area clean and dry
  • Increasing fiber intake
  • Avoiding straining
  • Sitz baths
  • Ligation or Banding – a common method of internal hemorrhoids where a physician ties off the base of the swollen vein causing the blood circulation to stop and the hemorrhoid eventually falls off.
  • Infrared Photocoagulation – use of an infrared light source to coagulate internal hemorrhoidal veins.
