Diverticulosis & Diverticulitis

These are benign conditions caused by diverticula or balloon-like pockets or crevices that develop in the weak points of the bowel wall — usually the colon. These pockets can cause discomfort, diarrhea and/or constipation.

Diverticulitis is a complication of diverticulosis that occurs when a tiny hole in a diverticulum or pocket allows bacteria in the colon to seep through its wall and cause inflammation or infection outside of the colon.

Diverticula occur due to pressure exerted within the contracting colon. Diverticulitis occurs when a tiny hole in a diverticulum or pocket allows bacteria in the colon to seep through its wall and cause inflammation or infection outside of the colon.

Diagnosing Diverticulitis:

Diverticulosis can be discovered during a barium enema or colonoscopy. Diverticulitis can be diagnosed through your past medical history or other diagnostic tools such as a CT, barium enema, x-ray or flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy.

Treatment for Diverticulosis & Diverticulitis:

These conditions may be treated successfully through diet, medication and/or surgery.
